Healthy Start projects address multiple issues, including:

  • Providing adequate prenatal care

  • Promoting positive prenatal health behaviors

  • Meeting basic health needs (nutrition, housing, psychosocial support)

  • Reducing barriers to access

  • Enabling client empowerment

Why Healthy Start?

 

The Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services began Healthy Start in 1991 in an effort to reduce the risk of infant mortality.

The common principles underlying the Healthy Start program are:

​

  • Innovations in service delivery

  • Community commitment and involvement

  • Personal responsibility demonstrated by expectant parents

  • Integration of health and social services

  • Multi-agency participation

  • Increased access to care

  • Public education

Healthy Start Services

 

  • Services for Pregnant Women and with Children up to 18 Months of Age in Robeson County

  • Classes to Discourage Alcohol and Other Drugs

  • Smoking Cessation Education

  • Safe Sleep Education

  • Educational Information for Well-Being of the Whole Family

  • Breast Feeding Education

  • Car Seat Traveling Safety

  • Mother and Father (Family) related assistance

  • Exposure to culturally sensitive literature

  • Transportation to appointments

  • Referrals to other necessary family-related resources

How We Can Help

 

  • Collaboration with other program providers in the area.

  • Health Education classes

  • Prenatal, postpartum, well-baby, family planning, and women’s overall health

  • Facilitate classes to include other caregivers

Eligibility Requirements

​

  • Female or Male Parent who has a baby or toddler up to 18 months in age

  • Must receive health care services from a RHCC health center or a program selected Woman’s Life Center

  • All Ages are Welcome

  • No Insurance is required
